Bristol Community Forest Path

tree
The Forest of Avon Community Forest Path is a 45 mile route that circles outer Bristol taking in the four unitary authorities of Bristol, BANES, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset, and the beautiful views, trees, and woodlands across the region.

The Route: was devised by Chris Bloor, a member of Town And Country Harriers, revealing wonderful running trails and paths right on the doorstep of the city. It is marked on Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps 155 an 167. It is also on OS Landranger 172 but this at a smaller scale and doesn't show field boundaries. There is a gpx file and a very useful annotated route guide, although the latter does not show more recent building developments and diversions.

Route variations: The Green Man Challenge is to complete the spirit of the Community Forest Path loop in 24 hours. There are numerous variations that people may choose to take for safety, scenery, temporary closures, or access to amenities. These are all acceptable and exploring variations is encouraged. UltraRunningLtd run a biannual race which follows much of the route.

Woodwose: Anybody who conquers the 45-mile Green Man Challenge around the Community Forest Path within 24 hours is termed a Woodwose, from the Old English wuduwasa or wood-being, regardless of gender. Woodwose is the proper name for the wild men and wild women that haunted the imaginary forests of medieval Europe and is entirely appropriate for anyone mad enough to conquer the Community Forest Path.

Woodwight: A wight is a general term for a living being or creature, often with supernatural connotations. A Woodwight is a wight associated with woods. They are kindly helpful beings. Anyone who helps a Woodwose is a Woodwight. Some Woodwoses started off as Woodwights, and others take up the role later.

Community: There is a Facebook group to discuss plans and exploits for those interested in undertaking the Green Man Challenge.
